The company is bringing in David Attenborough, who is a former Tabcorp managing director and chief executive officer, and has vast experience in the gaming and hospitality industries.
New Zealand’s SkyCity Brings Non-Exec Director
His appointment is effective from March 1, 2023, according to a filing by SkyCity, although the actual date is still a moving target. Commenting on his appointment, chairman Julian Cook welcomed Attenborough.
He said that the man had extensive gambling industry and corporate governance and sustainability experience, which is precisely what SkyCity’s board presently needs. The appointment is still subject to approvals by regulatory authorities in each gaming jurisdiction where the company is represented and operates.
SkyCity cautioned that this process may take several months to complete. Once these hurdles have been cleared, Attenborough will begin his advisory role and help steer the company toward better business decisions and calls.
Attenborough, who has more than 12 years of experience with Tabcorp Holdings Limited, is a seasoned veteran who understands the industry inside and out. His knowledge will offer SkyCity the expertise to make impactful moves that help boost results, improve performance, and make operations more resilient in the future.
Before serving at Tabcorp, Attenborough was the CEO of Phumelela Gaming and Leisure in South Africa. Prior to that, he had numerous senior roles with a variety of racing and casino organizations. He holds an MBA from Henley Business School and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Exeter.
SkyCity is headquartered in New Zealand, but the company is also exporting its gaming projects and know-how abroad. The company similarly has operations in Adelaide, Australia, where it operates another casino. The property is facing a potential fine of up to $40.62 million over various regulatory shortcomings, triggered by the investigations into Crown Resorts and The Star.
